So you think Notre Dame might lose a coach because of playoff access?

I suppose all schools in the SEC West not named Alabama, Auburn, or LSU will be losing coaches shortly. What are the odds you can get past those to behemoths, AND win the SEC championship game? It hasn't happened in the history of the SECCG. The fact is that unless you are Nick Saban, your chance at a playoff spot as an SEC coach is less than 10%. Do you think Brian Kelly would take a 10-1 bet that the Irish make the playoff this year? I would. Take a look at the Notre Dame custom-made schedule.

On the flipside, no school besides UT, Georgia and Florida in the SEC East has won the SEC, with only UT and UF in a position worthy of playoff consideration. Playoff odds are pretty bleak for the remainder.

No coach with an agent with half a brain will steer his client away from Notre Dame because of a lack of the mythical 'clear path to the playoff'. Where would Kelly go? Georgia? Plenty of dough there but I like my chances MUCH better at Notre Dame.

The fact is that the P5 are dominated by a select group of powerhouses - followed by everybody else. A coach's odds of a playoff appearance even at powerhouses like Nebraska, Florida, Georgia, and Penn State are terrible. How many of those schools come as close to theoretical eligibility as does Notre Dame?

I just do not see a coach leaving Notre Dame because of a feared playoff snub. Money? Sure. Playoffs? Not so much. If an opening at one of the true powerhouses comes Kelly might leave, but why would he get into the trenches with LSU, Auburn, Arkansas, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia et al when he can play a schedule assembled at Swarbrick's discretion? Have you seen the 2016 Irish schedule?
