Disagree. Basic geography is why the ACC beat out Big12.
The BigEast was crumbling and dome pretty dang good programs were squealing to get out. The obvious landing spot was the ACC. All would have preferred homes with the B1G or SEC BTW. Anyhow, had a major conference been crumbling on the other side of the Appalachian Mountains, the Big12 would have beat out the ACC.
Also, had the SEC wanted FSU or Clemson, both would have jumped in an instant. They were actually considering jumping to the Big12 remember. The Big12 wasn't ideal, but Swofford had bungled so many things, they found themselves tens of millions of dollars behind their instate rivals, still do.
Swofford had BigEast teams falling into his lap, yet he still added some of the wrong teams. WVU and Rutgers would have BOTH been far better options than BC, especially back in 2003. BC's been a costly disaster to this league. Not sure if you're aware of this, but the Swofford actually favored BC over Virginia Tech back then. It took them a decade too long to figure out football was the money driver.
Furthermore, if you look at that disasterous original contract the ACC signed in 2009, you will find it gave away any potential network material and was still far less lucrative than the one the Pac12 signed only months later. We're still renegotiating in order to dig ourselves out of that mess. And by the time this ACCN ever gets up and running, the hey day of the cable network game will have passed us by.
If you had been reading this board, you would have seen posters pointing out these missteps by ACC officials every step of the way.
Even if we do get competitive TV compensation at some point in the future, these horrible league schedules will do little to fill our football stadiums. VT could really really use some more games against Clemson and FSU to boost ticket sells and seat donations moving forward. We host them once/generation right now.
