That may be an unfortunate reality given the USSF's primary
goal may be to develop the men's national team to where it is a regular contender for the Semi-Final Round at the World Cup. If the USSF wants to achieve that goal then it needs to make sure it identifies its top players early enough so those players have plenty of time to compete against the best players in the world and develop their skills.
Also the talent pool has to be large enough to force the players to constantly improve their skills due to the increase in competition for a spot on the 23-man World Cup roster. It should get to the point where very few (if any) field players should be selected for the national team once he reaches his 27th or 28th birthday because he is considered "past his prime" by national team standards.
Unfortunately that narrow window for the national team will deter the top third players from considering playing for a collegiate team. Those players know if they opt to go to college then they will delay their opportunity to play against the best players in the world and possibly miss their opportunity to even be considered for the national team. It doesn't mean those players can't have a decent pro career maybe in MLS, but most likely in NASL or USSL.
As far as content goes, I don't see why the ACC couldn't televise soccer. Just don't expect men's or women's soccer to move the needle much even with the interest in the sport growing in the US. If that doesn't appease the ACC, then it may need to consider pushing to move sports around to balance out the content or push to add sports (i.e. rugby) to the NCAA sanctioned list.
