Even if VT won the next 200 games, it would still be a rivalry
because there will still be a level of disdain between the fanbases. I don't know for sure, but I would assume that is also true for the UNC-UVA rivalry. Also, keep in mind that the ACC has a vested interest in preserving The South's Oldest Rivalry. Right now the South's Oldest Rivalry is the longest continuous series in the southeast part of the US (maybe even in the nation or at least near the top). The next longest continuous series is the SEC's Deep South's Oldest Rivalry (aka Auburn vs. Georgia).
The day UNC vs. UVA is not played, the crown is passed to the SEC. So for the ACC is all about conference pride and having 1 up on the SEC. Remember the only reason the SEC implemented the protected cross-division game when it expanded to 12 members is so it could preserve 2 annual rivalries; The Third Saturday in October and The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry. It is why a lot of people think (myself included) that if/when the SEC expands to 16 members, then it will do it in such a way that allows them to move the 2 AL schools to the East Division so they can continue preserving those 2 rivalry games.
