The ACC may not have to choose if it keeps the divisions

static and maintains the protected cross-division game. UNC, Duke, and UVA are placed in 1 division. While NC State, Wake, and VT are placed in the other division. The protected cross-division pairings would be UNC-NC State, Duke-Wake, and VT. The only games impacted are Duke-NC State and UNC-Wake which is a small sacrifice to make to ensure UNC-UVA and UVA-VT games continue to be played annually.

If the ACC opts for pods, then most likely it will go with a zipper model. For example purposes let's assume that WVU is #15 and Memphis is #16 (since Notre Dame will never join as a full member)

Pod A - BC, Louisville, NC State, Clemson
Pod B - Syracuse, Memphis, Wake, GT
Pod C - Pitt, UVA, UNC, FSU
Pod D - WVU, VT, Duke, Miami

The protected cross-division pairings are as follows (in order from left to right)
Pool A-Pool B (i.e. BC-Syracuse.....)
Pool C-Pool D (i.e. Pitt-WVU.........)

Either Pool A and Pool B or Pool C and Pool D would rotate every 2 years.

One reason the rotating pods are the least desired option is because it forces schools to decide who they want to continue playing annually. UNC would have to decide whether it wants to be paired with Duke or NC State. Also, the Clemson-FSU game mostly likely won't continue to be played annually because the ACC opts to go with the FSU-Miami pairing since the Clemson-FSU rivalry didn't really take off until the "Bowden Bowl."

Also, if the 4 NC schools are divided evenly between 2 pods, then it could mean that Clemson, FSU, GT, and Miami are divided evenly in the other 2 pods. For VT, would it (including fans) be okay being placed in a pod with NC State and Wake even though mostly likely the 4th member won't be Clemson, FSU, GT, or Miami? Instead it would likely be a school from the "Northeast Pod" because Louisville and whomever else would be placed in the Clemson/FSU or GT/Miami pods to offset where the 2 VA schools are placed. Keeping with the WVU and Memphis from above then the pods could look something like this:

Pod A - UVA, Duke, UNC, Pitt
Pod B - VT, Wake, NC State, WVU
Pod C - Clemson, FSU, Memphis, BC
Pod D - GT, Miami, L'ville, Syracuse

Protected cross-divisions would still be Pod A-Pod B and Pod C-Pod (still in order from left to right). Personally, I would rather see the ACC give equal representation to the 4 "regions" because then no pod(s) is/are given a recruiting advantage in certain regions because of how frequently they play teams from that region.
