That may happen, but don't be shocked if SCOTUS eventually rules

that those automatic bids for only certain conferences and not all 10 FBS conferences is a violation of antitrust laws because the courts view as being a "constraint of trade." Right now no one has a case for the current system violating antitrust laws because all 4 bids are technically at-large bids. In theory, at the beginning of the season all 10 FBS conferences have an equal chance to potentially having 1 team represent the conference in the Playoffs.

Let's assume that the 5 power conferences receive an automatic bid to an 8-team playoff and either no automatic bid or 1 bid to the highest ranked G5 champion. Under that scenario, there is a possibility that the 5 G5 champions and even Notre Dame could all finished ranked higher than the 5 P5 champions. Given that there would be 5 teams competing for the 2 at-large spots, that would mean 3 "more deserving teams" would be left out of the Playoffs that year. Plus, if any of the P5 champions happen to finished unranked, then does the conference really deserve an automatic bid that year?
