And what I have been suggesting is that if a new deal can't be done

then the P5s will try to implement the alternate plan to ensure the SEC doesn't gain too much of an advantage within the group. Also, I don't believe all the P5s support the 6 highest ranked conference champions receive automatic bids plan because there could be years (like this year) where at least 1 P5 champion could lose an automatic bid to a higher ranked G5 champion.

While the G5s don't really like either plan because both only increase the gap within DI. Even though fans don't acknowledge it or even realize it, the G5s do have some leverage in these discussions. If the P5s threaten to form their own football playoff, then the G5s, rest of the DIs, DIIs, and DIIIs can say "Go ahead and do it, but only as a separate division level." Once the P5s go down that road, then they are putting all their non-revenue sports at risk because a majority of those sports are depended upon the G5s/mid-majors to ensure the sport has enough participating teams. The P5s can't risk harming those sports without violating federal and state laws (i.e. Title IX). Since the P5s don't really like the alternative scenarios (which includes the P5s adding a whole bunch of new sports at one time), it basically forces them back to the negotiation table to try to work out a deal or risk going to court to be forced back to the negotiation table.
